Common Starfish (Asterias rubens) is the most common species of starfish in the Northern Atlantic. Common starfish are a popular rockpool species as they are easily identified by their colour and are usually between 10 and 30 cm wide but can grow as large as 50cm. In shallow coastal waters, common starfish can gather in groups of up to 100 animals but the reasons for such gatherings are still unclear.
